Benefits of Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry has many benefits. Some will be universal, and some will be very personal to you. Some of the main reasons patients choose to improve their smile through the many procedures cosmetic dentistry has to offer.

  • More Confidence in Your Smile

One of the first things people notice about you is your smile. If you have a healthy, straight white smile that you’re proud to show off, you’ll often feel more confident in your appearance. This will enable you to speak up in meetings and social situations, smile and laugh freely, and feel confident in photos, videos, and everyday life.

  • A More Functional Smile

Cosmetic dentistry isn’t always purely cosmetic. Procedures like dental implants can restore your smile and return your ability to eat, drink, and speak normally again. Being able to do these things freely and without a second thought is integral to achieving and maintaining a high quality of life.

  • A Youthful Appearance

A healthy white smile can take years off your appearance, and help you to look and feel young again.

  • Your Own Preferences

Cosmetic dentistry may benefit you in a very personal way. Maybe you’ve always felt self-conscious, and are looking for a permanent solution to help you love the way your smile looks and boost your self-esteem.  Maybe you have chipped, cracked, or missing teeth that cause pain and malfunction. Even if it’s just a few crooked teeth out of place that a few months of braces can solve, you deserve to feel happy with and confident in your smile.

Veneers

Dental veneers are thin, tooth-coloured shells made of either porcelain or composite materials. They’re bonded to the surface of your permanent teeth to aesthetically improve your smile. Veneers are used to treat a variety of aesthetic issues such as discoloured teeth, and crooked, chipped, or broken teeth. Some patients choose to get veneers simply to improve the overall appearance of their smile.

How Are Veneers Placed?

One of the first things people notice about you is your smile. If you have a healthy, straight white smile that you’re proud to show off, you’ll often feel more confident in your appearance. This will enable you to speak up in meetings and social situations, smile and laugh freely, and feel confident in photos, videos, and everyday life.

  1. Our dentists will first create a mould of your teeth to have accurate veneers created for you. Once the veneers are back from the lab, we’ll take the time to make sure they’re a proper fit, and that they’re the right size and colour.
  2. Our dental specialists will then professionally clean your teeth. This prevents bacteria from being trapped beneath the veneers and putting you at risk for cavities and other oral health issues. Once your teeth are clean, your dentist will roughen the surface so the veneers can stick.
  3. Veneers are bonded using dental cement. Ultraviolet light will then harden the veneer to attach it securely to your tooth.

Once this process has been completed for every veneer, you can enjoy your new smile almost instantly!

Dental Implants

An implant is surgically placed to replace the root of a missing tooth. The implant is often made of metal, creating a strong structure to hold a replacement tooth in place. This restores functionality to your bite so you can eat, speak, and smile freely again. An implant also prevents your other permanent teeth from shifting and misaligning your bite.

Teeth Whitening

Having your teeth professionally whitened is a very simple, safe, and straightforward process. Teeth whitening will be done in the office, and can typically be completed in just one visit depending on the amount of discolouration.

How Does Professional Teeth Whitening Work?

We use a method called chair side bleaching to complete this process. Before they begin, they’ll make sure your gums are protected from the bleaching products being used for whitening. This protection will be in the form of either a rubber shield, or a protective gel that is applied topically to your gums. This prevents potential injury to the gum area while being able to deliver maximum whitening results.

We will also record the current shade of your teeth, and polish them to remove any plaque on the surface. This will help the bleaching products target the surface of your teeth and whiten them more effectively.

Finally, the whitening solution will be applied to the front surface of your teeth. The whitening session will range anywhere from 30-60 minutes, and whether or not it’s reapplied will depend on the opinion of your dentist. Once the desired shade has been reached the product will be rinsed off, and you can enjoy your white smile!

Who is a Good Candidate for Teeth Whitening?

Those with good oral health and permanent teeth are always good candidates to have their teeth whitened. Whitening permanent teeth with no oral health issues poses little to no risk to the patient, and can effectively deliver the whitening results they’re looking for.

Anyone with moderate to severe discolouration is also a great candidate. The bleaching products being used will remove the topical layer of yellow or brown on the surface of the teeth, and also penetrate further into the enamel to target deeper stains for a complete treatment.

Lastly, those who have had a recent check-up and cleaning are ideal candidates. Any oral health issues need to be diagnosed and treated prior to whitening to achieve the best results.

Porcelain Inlays, Onlays and Crowns

Porcelain crowns are one of the most natural-looking options when it comes to choosing a cap to protect, cover, and aesthetically enhance the shape and appearance of your teeth. These crowns are often used when traditional fillings can’t be and help restore your teeth from damage and trauma caused by severe tooth decay.

Inlays and Onlays can be used in place of traditional fillings to protect teeth that have been damaged by tooth decay. They’re bonded over your teeth, unlike traditional fillings which are used to fill cavities once all the decay has been removed.

Both inlays and onlays also help to preserve the structure of your teeth. Inlays and onlays have greater longevity, are very durable, and look more natural than traditional fillings.

Bonding

Tooth bonding is a less expensive way to achieve a straight, white smile without the use of orthodontics. We will apply a tooth-coloured composite resin to the surface of all the necessary teeth to achieve a cosmetically enhanced smile. This procedure is typically less expensive than veneers and can deliver similar results.

What Cosmetic Issues Can Bonding Correct?

Patients will seek cosmetic bonding for a variety of reasons.

  • Fixing minor imperfections
  • Repair decayed, discoloured teeth
  • Close gaps between teeth
  • Fix cracked or chipped teeth
  • Fix the size of one or more teeth

How is The Bonding Procedure Performed?

Tooth bonding is simpler and less time consuming than other cosmetic dental procedures. If you aren’t having any other work done such as getting a cavity filled prior to the procedure, it’s possible for your dentist to complete the procedure in just one visit.

Before any work is done, it’s important to match the composite resin to the colour of your tooth. The goal is for it to look as natural as possible. Once our dental specialist has found a close match, they’ll prepare your tooth by roughening the surface. This preps the area for the bonding agent, and the liquid that goes on to help the bonding agent stick.

Once the bonding agent has been applied, it’s time to place the composite resin and complete the process. Your dentist will carefully place the composite resin over the bonding agent and make sure it attaches properly. From there, they will mold it to your tooth to achieve a natural look. The composite resin will be shaped to your tooth perfectly, and then hardened with an ultraviolet light.

Porcelain Fixed Bridges

Porcelain fixed bridges are non-removable, very natural looking appliances. These bridges will replace any missing teeth with an appearance that very closely resembles your permanent teeth.

These bridges are highly durable and can last several years with proper care. Filling the gaps in your smile will help restore your bite, prevent your other permanent teeth from drifting out of place, help you to chew and speak normally and painlessly, and maintain your facial shape. Correcting any gaps in your teeth will also help you smile with confidence again.

Fantastic experience! I needed a tooth removed and prepped for an implant, and was referred to Clear Dental for help with this. I can’t explain how happy I’ve been with everyone at the clinic. I’ve had lots of dental work over the years and seen several specialists. The doctors at Clear Dental are top-notch, friendly, gentle and I would recommend them to anyone. Keep up the great work!

Frequently Asked Questions About Cosmetic Dentistry

Below are answers to questions many of our patients have asked when considering cosmetic dentistry treatments.

Cosmetic dentistry is an option for anyone looking to improve the look of their smile. If you’re looking for professional whitening so your teeth will really pop, a cosmetic dentist can help you find the shade that will work for you. If you chip or crack your teeth, cosmetic dentistry can help to restore them.

It can also be a saving grace for severely crooked, impacted, broken, or missing teeth. Cosmetic dentistry can solve even the most severe cases of misalignment, with a treatment plan designed specifically to your needs. No two treatments will ever be the same, and your own cosmetic dental journey will differ greatly from anyone else’s. If you’re interested in a consultation to see what cosmetic dentistry can do for your smile, don’t hesitate to ask questions!

Many people are under the impression that cosmetic dentistry will only affect the appearance of your smile. The reality is that getting cosmetic work done can relieve stress, pain, and discomfort that you may be experiencing due to a misaligned jaw, or crooked teeth.

Here are some of the less talked about benefits of cosmetic dentistry.

  • Proper jaw and teeth development once treated
  • Easier breathing and eating
  • A significant boost in self-esteem
  • Better oral hygiene

Straight teeth are much easier to keep clean, as there are fewer gaps. At the end of your treatment, you can anticipate an easier brushing and flossing routine.

Of course, there will always be other benefits that are very personal to you. This could include finally having the confidence to speak up in a meeting, no longer feeling self-conscious on a first date, and so much more.

Every smile is entirely unique. This means that every treatment plan we create will vary as we tailor them to each patient’s individual needs and goals. Treatment time will also vary based on what method of treatment you choose.

If you choose to straighten your teeth with Invisalign or braces, you can expect your treatment to take anywhere from a few months to a few years. A few crooked teeth can be corrected in a short amount of time with the right guidance, whereas severe malocclusions can often take a year or two to fully treat. Your dentist will always estimate your treatment timeline for you so you have a vague idea of what you’re in for.

Treatments like porcelain veneers often require just a handful of visits before your smile makeover is complete. Make sure to discuss your goals and smile vision with your dentist so they know exactly how to help you, and are able to give you your dream smile as quickly as possible.

Coverage for cosmetic dentistry can vary based on necessity. Due to the fact that cosmetic dental procedures are often used to correct aesthetic issues, you may be required to pay for them out of pocket. You can discuss your current coverage with your employer and identify any areas where you may be able to utilize some of your dental coverage for cosmetic dentistry.

Alternatively, some cosmetic dentistry procedures can be considered medically necessary. For example, extreme decay that’s causing tooth loss or broken teeth is a medical issue that needs to be treated. In this case, you may be able to have some of the procedures covered by insurance. It all depends on your reason for seeking out cosmetic treatment, and the type of insurance plan that you have.
